The Opportunity:

In this position, you'll oversee the adherence to and quality control of radiation safety protocols, providing guidance and analytical support. You will also engage in mentoring radiation protection personnel and contribute to both document control and operational tasks as required.

This opportunity is to join the WSP team responsible for the execution and construction of the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI). The PHAI represents the federal government's response to the community-requested solution for the cleanup and local, long-term, safe management of historic low-level radioactive waste in the municipalities of Port Hope and Clarington.

Please note we will consider candidates based in various locations throughout Canada, but this opportunity is based at the project site in Port Hope, Ontario

What you can expect to do here:
  • You will perform pre-submittal quality control (QC) and review radiation protection (RP) field forms.
  • You will conduct pre-submittal QC and reviews of RP reports.
  • You will identify RP QC trends and apply corrective actions.
  • You will deliver QC training and coaching to RP staff.
  • You will have the ability to summarize and analyze routine RP data for QC verification in routine reports.
  • You will ensure compliance with project quality plans and procedures by RP staff.
  • You will provide limited coaching, mentoring, and guidance to other radiation protection staff.
  • You will support Radiation Protection Specialists (RPS) in the management of RP documents.
  • You will support the RP management and site management teams

What you'll bring to WSP:
  • Post secondary education in nuclear engineering, radiation science or health physics (or related scientific field) preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of radiation protection field experience required.
  • Individuals with previous work experience as a Sr. RP technician will be considered.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of RP principles consistent with their background and training.
  • Experience with a variety field data collection methods and associated data processing.
  • Ability to convert between different radiation units.
  • Ability to QC (including sort, compile, summarize and assess) routine data using typical Microsoft Office products such as Word and Excel.
  • Strong ability to clearly and concisely, communicate in English, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to train and coach RP staff on QC principles and processes.
  • Ability to train and coach RP staff on documents management principles and processes.
  • Must be eligible for CNL Reliability Status security clearance (individual must have THREE full years of recent, concurrent years of verifiable history in Canada, USA, UK, New Zealand and/or Australia).

Physical Requirements:

Sr. Radiation Protection Quality Technician must be able to:
  • Wear PPE, including respirators if required. Site-specific radiation protection PPE will be provided.
  • Walk outdoors (sometimes in rugged terrain) regularly while carrying instrumentation. They will be expected to work in and around water.
  • Lift up to 5kgs on a frequent basis and 10kgs on an occasional basis.
  • Stand for up to 3 hours at a time, and/or able to work with arms extended (in surveying equipment and trucks while holding survey/decon instrumentation) for up to 15-20 minutes at a time.
  • Work at heights and inside confined spaces.
