WSP is seeking a Planner/Intermediate Planner to join our Urban and Community Planning team. The Planner will have a key role in supporting a diverse portfolio of land use planning projects. This position requires a motivated and detail-oriented individual with strong analytical and communication skills, who will support senior members of our team to develop and implement a range of land use planning assignments. This role offers great opportunity for upward growth, with clear pathways for professional development, including participation in a national centre of excellence. The successful candidate would be based out of the Kitchener, Ontario office.

What you can expect do here:
- Assists with the authorship, preparation and coordination of planning studies, zoning by-laws, official plans, secondary plans, community improvement plans, and other projects;
- Conducts research and analysis to support undertaking a range of planning studies, applying critical thinking to develop land use planning approaches applicable to a wide variety of municipalities, including large urban, small towns, and rural communities;
- Supports project managers with tasks such as preparing invoices, preparing and tracking project schedules, and other project-specific tasks;
- Ensures the prioritization of high-quality work that is representative of WSP's strong commitment to quality, and a demonstrated ability to adapt to a highly dynamic environment with shifting priorities;
- Has demonstrated interest and experience in coordinating and participating in community engagement activities in both a virtual and hybrid setting;
- Contributes to developing work plans and proposals in response to municipal requests for proposals;
- Exercises tact, diplomacy, and professionalism when interacting with external stakeholders, clients, the public, politicians, and colleagues;
- Exercises sound project management principles, such as proactively identifying challenges, risks, opportunities, and identifies creative solutions to overcome problems;
- Coordinates and liaises with multi-disciplinary teams on land use planning projects, such as urban design, landscape architecture, engineering, and others; and
- Stays current with planning trends, best practices, and legislative changes, and applies that knowledge to support innovative and thoughtful solutions for municipal clients.
What you'll bring to WSP:
- University degree in Planning, Environmental Studies, or Communications, Public Policy, Geography, or a similar degree;
- A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a municipal or consulting environment, with 3 or more years considered an asset. Recent graduates may also be considered;
- A demonstrated commitment to professional development and thought leadership;
- Excellent written and oral communication and time management skills;
- A strong interest in municipal planning, public policy, and/or land use regulation;
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of provincial land use planning legislation and policy, and application of that knowledge to municipal land use planning projects;
- Interest in public participation and consultation, with demonstrated experience considered an asset;
- Highly motivated, organized, flexible, and enthusiastic team player committed to upholding our reputation for delivering high quality service;
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, query, analyze, and effectively communicate information;
- Experience with SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools or demonstrated knowledge in urban design principles and practices is considered an asset;
- Full Membership, or eligibility for Full Membership, in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Institute of Planners; and
- Valid Ontario Driver's License.
