The Opportunity:

WSPis currently seeking an experienced Roads Manager to join our Land Development & Municipal Engineering department in Ottawa. This position will lead a team of professionals, technicians, and support staff in the delivery of our roads program in the area. Reporting directly to the Discipline Director, the candidate will provide technical, management and financial leadership, as well as client management to our business practice.

As a member of the Land Development & Municipal Engineering group, you will be given opportunities to apply your education and experience on complex construction projects. You will be challenged to manage multiple priorities, multiple projects, meet tight deadlines, and maintain a very high quality. The candidate should have a demonstrated ability to lead a team of professionals with excellent communication skills both internally with staff and externally with clients. The candidate should also have experience with business development, client interactions and project delivery.

What you can expect to do here:

A Manager begins their week with a team huddle, discussing the week's objectives with other Project Managers, Engineers, Engineering Graduates and Technologists. They then dive into the technicalities, completing preliminary and detailed design calculations, plans, and reports, reviewing intricate drawings and technical specifications for various municipal and land development projects. Collaboration is key, as they coordinate with multiple disciplines to ensure all aspects of the projects align. The work includes reviewing project plans and site conditions, ensuring compliance with zoning laws and applicable regulations and guidelines. You will collaborate with other stakeholders including Geotechnical and Structural Engineers, Landscape Architects, Architects, Contractors, and Clients to design infrastructure that supports community growth, such as roads, active transportation facilities, water and wastewater conveyance systems, and public spaces. The work is a balance between office-based design and on-site application, all contributing to the sustainable development of the community. Each project brings unique challenges and opportunities to innovate, making every day a dynamic experience in shaping the spaces where people live and work. A Manager continuously supports the development and mentorship of young professionals

In addition to these responsibilities, a manager is prepared to take on other duties as required, showcasing their versatility and commitment to the team. Their contributions are essential to the successful delivery of public and private sector projects, impacting communities by enhancing the efficiency and safety of land development and municipal engineering projects. A few additional responsibilities include:
  • Accountability for the overall performance of the department under their direction, including meeting established revenue and profitability targets, effective management of invoicing, accounts receivable and other financial metrics.
  • Responsibility for overall resource management, including recruitment, team building, staff development and performance management. Implement and track career development plans for staff within the department to support skills development, effective succession management, career pathing and staff retention. Responsible for the salary review process for the unit in collaboration with business line management and the HR department.
  • Working with Team Leads/Project Managers to monitor the overall performance of projects being undertaken by the department, ensuring effective and proactive management of project finances, scope, schedule, quality and effective client service. Provide leadership and support to ensure consistent and effective use of corporate project management tools.
  • Monitoring and managing overall workload and staffing levels within the department to maintain overall utilization at desirable levels. Work with the Discipline Director and other managers to support inter-office collaboration and resource/work sharing to balance workloads and meet project delivery objectives across the Discipline.

What you'll bring to WSP:
  • University degree in Civil Engineering;
  • Registered as a P.Eng. in Ontario;
  • Minimum 15 years of experience working in a project management capacity preliminary and detailed design assignments for the City of Ottawa, MTO or other municipalities within Ontario;
  • 5+ years of managing and mentoring technical staff;
  • Experience within an engineering consulting environment is an asset;
  • Strong leadership, negotiation, communication and customer relationship skills are essential;
  • Ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and written) with the internal and external clients and stakeholders, and build well-developed teams and positive relationships;
  • Excellent technical, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
