Our Resources subsector, a key component of WSP's ERI (Energy, Resources and Industry) sector, supports clients from coast to coast. Over the decades, we have developed a wide range of services, including economic studies, project management, detailed design, procurement, site management, commissioning and industrial programming. This division provides a full range of services to industrial and mining projects, including all services offered in the field of engineering from conceptual and feasibility studies to complete detailed engineering in EPCM, to the closure and dismantling of mine sites. Our experts work together to offer our clients services that live up to our vision: to meet the highest standards in the industry and innovate to exceed them.
To meet our growth challenges, WSP is currently seeking a Lead Layout Designer to join our Mechanical Team, located in any of our Canadian offices - Etobicoke, Mississauga, Thornhill, Sudbury, Thunder Bay and/or Saskatoon, SK are preferred.
This position will play a key role in leading the design and optimization in the layout design of heavy industrial projects across the subsector. The successful candidate will have experience leading teams and hands on experience with preparing 3D models and layout arrangements for plant upgrades and new facilities, reviewing drawings and designs, developing process diagrams, site plans through to detail, resource managing and client management. This role involves close collaboration with different disciplines as well as clients and stakeholders to understand their engineering needs, ensuring successful project coordination.

What you can expect to do here:
- You will prepare 3D models and layout general arrangements for existing plant upgrades and new facilities;
- You will review vendor drawings to ensure conformity with engineering designs prior to fabrication;
- You will prepare design calculations and design briefs;
- You will prepare design sketches;
- You will prepare trade-off studies and reports;
- You will participate in field engineering assignments;
- You will review all design work pertaining to layout general arrangements and equipment model development;
- You will coordinate with other disciplines to ensure a timely and accurate flow of design information, while ensuring departmental and client standards are maintained;
- You will handle the maintenance and revision of equipment libraries, department standards and procedures;
- You will attend model reviews;
- You will prepare man-hour estimates;
- You will determine layout staffing requirements on projects;
- You will manage large groups of designers on a project including assigning work to staff;
- You will participate in project cost estimates;
- You will develop and recommend improvements in design standards to lower costs, improve work quality and facilitate plant maintenance;
- You will provide technical guidance and leadership to layout project staff;
- You will be responsible for the technical accuracy, completeness, and quality of all layout deliverables and activities on a project.
- You will prepare layout technical quality audits on multiple projects.
What you'll bring to WSP:
- College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent;
- 15+ years experience in mechanical engineering design specifically with experience in layout design for heavy industrial and/or mining projects;
- 2+ years experience in a team lead role;
- Strong understanding of mechanical equipment installation requirements in the field;
- Must have consulting experience;
- Proven experience with Plant3D, Revit, Microstation, SolidEdge and SmartPlant;
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal);
- French language skills (written and verbal) an asset;
- Strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and a desire to perform design engineering;
- Strong leadership and management skills;
- Strong critical thinking skills and an ability to problem solve effectively.
